alquerque is played on a 5x5 square grid with 25 sections, connected horizontally, vertically and diagonally. Each player has 12 pawns, placed on the first three rows in front of the player, while the center field is empty. The goal of the game is to remove all the opponent's pioneers or block all his moves. A pawn can be moved to an adjacent empty square. If a pawn can jump over an opponent's pawn and land on an empty square behind it, it captures that pawn, removing it from the board. Players take turns moving, and multiple jumps are possible during a single move.
