Pac-man found inspiration in pizza
Many claim that the game itself Pac Man originated when Iwatani (Pac-Man designer) took the first slice of pizza from the box and saw a shape that he later copied onto Pac-Man himself – a circle in which one triangle is missing and represents the mouth. At the height of his popularity, he would pose with a half-eaten pizza for a marketing promotion. Some of the legends dictate that the shape originated from the Japanese alphabet, specifically the character representing the word mouth. However, as it is partly a cube, there have been certain modifications.
Pac-man game development
The game itself was developed for about 18 months, which according to many is quite a long period of development for such a simple game. But the main reason was the development of an advanced enemy movement system. Namely, the developers struggled with how to make the enemies (ghosts in the game) smarter and more challenging as the levels increase. Other games did this by increasing the number of enemies, but here they thought in a completely different direction (artificial intelligence). One is programmed to hunt the player, two are programmed to intercept him from behind and in front trying to block his path, while the last one is tasked with wandering aimlessly around the map and thus forcing the player to change direction.
